Structure of Daniel 8-12

Study:

Notice there is a readily perceivable structure to the last four chapters of the Book of Daniel. First, notice the prophetic chapters. Chapters 8 and 11 deal with the rise and fall of nations.

"The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. [etc.]" Daniel 8:20,21

"... Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. [etc.]" Daniel 11:2,3

In these two quotes, we see at least two kingdoms mentioned: Medo-Persia and Greece or, from the study of the history of Daniel 2 and 7, the Achaemenid Empire and the Empire of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Kingdoms of his Successors. These prophecies parallel those of Daniel 2 & 7.

Partial Structure:

Chapter 8:
Rise and
Fall of
Kingdoms
Chapter 11:
Rise and
Fall of
Kingdoms

Notice now, that the mysterious man of Daniel 10 occurs also in Daniel 12 and that he occurs in these two chapters and nowhere else. Furthermore, in parallel with the occurrence of the man in linen is Michael. Michael occurs in these two chapters and nowhere else.

"Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen,..." Daniel 10:5

"And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river,..." Daniel 12:6

"...but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me;..." Daniel 10:13

"...and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince." Daniel 10:21

"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people:..." Daniel 12:1

Partial Structure:

Chapter 8:
Rise and
Fall of
Kingdoms
Chapter 10:
Man in linen
and
Michael
Chapter 11:

But what of Daniel 9? Does it fit into this structure? Yes!

"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem ... the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times." Daniel 9:25

"...and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined." Daniel 9:26

"...and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." Daniel 9:27

Daniel 9 concerns the rise and fall of a kingdom... the rise and fall of the Jewish nation.
