Structure of Daniel 9:24

Study:

"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy." Daniel 9:24

First, notice that the first phrase, of this verse, is just an introduction. It tells us what we are about to speak of.

"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city,"

Next, notice that the remainder of this verse consists of six phrases. We know this because each is headed by a verb. Furthermore, the first three phrases all deal with sin.

  1. "to finish the transgression, and"
  2. "to make an end of sins, and"
  3. "to make reconciliation for iniquity, and"
  4. "to bring in everlasting righteousness, and"
  5. "to seal up the vision and prophecy, and"
  6. "to anoint the most Holy."

We now need to pass to the Hebrew of this passage to make further observations.

Note 1: the following information is taken from BibleHub.com. There are two variants for the second phrase. I have included both even though the variants make no difference in the meaning.
Note 2: Hebrew is read right to left.

Notice the indications that verse 24 consists of two separate sections (aside from the introductory phrase):

  1. the 1st 3 phrases all deal with "sin": "the transgression," "sins," and "iniquity,"
  2. the 1st 3 phrases all consist of 2 Hebrew words while the last 3 phrases all consist of 3 Hebrew words, and
  3. the verb of the middle phrase in each set of 3 phrases, is the same verb, Strong #2856, "to make an end of"/"to seal up."

These differences/particularities are not just a coincidence. These 6 phrases were designed with purpose to make it clear that they are separated into two parts, the first three phrases being one part and the last three phrases being another.

To be continued...
